Bright Ideas

When it comes to household chores, laundry is no time to get lazy. If performed properly, you can fight for the bright in no time.

Get ready to fight for the bright, and say good-bye to that bit 'o the dingies for good.

Step 1: Sort the Lot

The best way to keep your whites white and colors bright is to sort the lot into four loads: whites, lights, darks, and delicates.

If you're fixed for what's a light and what's a white, use this trick: Toss neutral tones (such as grays, creams, and pastels) into the light load. Everything else belongs in your white or dark wash.

Delicates are those items you fancy for a night on the town.

Step 2: Ready the Wash

Before you start that wash, take good care to set the proper water temperature.

  • Cold: Best for colors to prevent running and reduce shrinkage
  • Warm: Reserved for permanent-press items to help prevent color loss
  • Hot: Ideal for whites and dreadfully dingy pieces
Now you're quite ready to add a bit of Cheer®, letting it mix with the water before adding your clothes.

Step 3: Take to the Dryer

Before yanking any items out of the wash, you ought to know which pieces have special drying requirements. Carry off any items marked "line dry" or "lay flat to dry" and set aside.

Take the rest of the lot out of the wash, shake out, and toss into the dryer. It's rather important you don't forget to fetch a dryer sheet. Once everything's properly dry, promptly remove your pieces and tuck away in your wardrobe.

A Laundress's List

Try these tips to help keep your clothes brilliant and bright.
  • Turn dark clothing inside out to help prevent fading.
  • Do the same for sweaters to reduce pilling.
  • Mind any pockets and remove items inside before washing.
  • Close buttons, zip zippers, and fasten clasps to prevent damage to your delicates.
  • Before drying, separate lint-shredders (fuzzy sweatshirts, chenille robes, flannels, and towels) from lint-keepers (knits, corduroys, and permanent-press fabrics)
  • Tie drawstrings on sweatshirts and trousers to prevent knotting.
  • Don't bleach natural fabrics, such as linen, as it can weaken the fibers.
  • Soak dingy, grubby fabrics overnight to get them back to bright.
